Biological Activity
(±)-Reticuline is a racemic mixture of S-reticuline and R-reticuline. R-Reticuline can undergo O-methylation catalyzed by PSOMT1, and can also be converted into (+)-salutaridine through a regio- and stereoselective oxidative coupling reaction mediated by salutaridine synthase (CYP719B1). R-Reticuline serves as a direct precursor for the biosynthesis of important alkaloids such as morphine, codeine, and thebaine. S-Reticuline exhibits anti-inflammatory activity via the JAK2/STAT3 and NF-κB signaling pathways.
