(1-Amino-1-phosphonooctyl)phosphonic acid is a selective acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase) inhibitor with an IC₅₀ of 40 nM against rat aSMase. (1-Amino-1-phosphonooctyl)phosphonic acid blocks the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to ceramide and shows no significant inhibition of Mg²⁺-dependent neutral sphingomyelinase (nSMase).

(1-Amino-1-phosphonooctyl)phosphonic acid (Up to 100 µM) does not substantially inhibit Mg²⁺-dependent nSMase (IC₅₀ >100 µM)^[1].
