Thioxanthone is a powerful photocatalyst for organic reactions. Thioxanthone mediates energy transfer, single-electron transfer, and hydrogen atom transfer processes. As a photoredox catalyst, Thioxanthone is used in nickel-catalyzed self-coupling reactions of aryl halides, arylation reactions of H-phosphine oxides/H-phosphites, decarbonylation reactions of cyclopropenones, and reactions generating acyl radicals from aromatic aldehydes.

Thioxanthone acts as an effective type II photoinitiator for radical polymerization, generating propagating radicals through interactions with hydrogen or electron donor co-initiators, with derivatives enabling co-initiator-free polymerization via photodecomposition or intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer[1].
Thioxanthone acts as a triplet energy transfer sensitizer to promote regioselective oxyimination of mono-, di-, and tri-substituted unactivated alkenes with oxime carbonate esters, while tetra-substituted alkenes are unreactive[1].
