Formate dehydrogenase is a class of oxidoreductases widely distributed in bacteria, fungi, plants and animals. Formate dehydrogenase catalyzes the reversible conversion between formic acid and carbon dioxide, accompanied by redox reactions of the coenzyme NAD+/NADH or other electron carriers.

In Vitro
Overexpression of formate dehydrogenase (1 g/L formate; 48-96 h) in S. cerevisiae FA enhances the tolerance of S. cerevisiae FA to 1 g/L formate, decomposes formate into CO2, and simultaneously improves glucose utilization, cell density and cell viability[1].
Overexpression of formate dehydrogenase under conditions of 4 g/L acetic acid and 48-96 h in S. cerevisiae FA enhances the acetic acid tolerance of S. cerevisiae FA. By converting CO2 into formate and additionally producing ATP, it enables faster glucose utilization, higher ethanol yield, higher cell density, and stronger cell viability[1].
Formate dehydrogenase enhances aluminum tolerance in tobacco[2].
