Disperse black 9 is an azo dye that exhibits a strong emission band in the 555-610 nm range under excitation at 528 nm. Disperse black 9 can be used as a non-oxidative hair dye ingredient. Disperse black 9 has mild irritant effects on rabbit skin.

Description
In Vitro
Disperse Black 9 (1% Disperse Black 9 in hair dye cream formulation; 20 mg/cm2; 30 min exposure) produces a systemically available active dye amount of 0.128 μg/cm2 in female skin sections in hair dye cream (0.122% of the applied dose)[1].
Disperse black 9 in DMF has absorption maxima at 300 and 446 nm, with emission bands at 555-610 nm (λex 528 nm; Stokes shift 50 nm), while in the solid state its excitation and emission bands appear at lower wavelengths than in DMF; the CIE coordinates at 528 nm are (0.5066, 04924), located in the yellow-orange region[2].
