Penicillinase is an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing penicillin. Penicillinase converts penicillin into penicilloic acid, which has no antigenicity, and destroys the antibacterial, antigenic and epileptogenic properties of penicillin. Penicillinase shortens the duration of penicillin-induced seizures and neutralizes the ability of penicillin to form epileptogenic foci. Penicillinase can be used in research related to penicillin hypersensitivity and penicillin-induced encephalopathy.

Penicillinase destroys penicillin in vitro^[1].

In Vivo

Penicillinase (800,000 units; intravenous or intramuscular injection) completely eliminates penicillin-induced generalized epileptiform electroencephalographic and behavioral seizure activity in adult cats within 3 hours after the first injection of penicillin, and significantly shortens the seizure duration that exceeds 6 hours without treatment^[2].
Topical administration of penicillinase prevents or eliminates penicillin-induced focal epileptogenic foci in acutely prepared adult cats without altering normal cortical electroencephalographic activity, but it has no effect on strychnine-induced epilepsy^[2].
