ADAM20
ADAM20 is a testis-restricted ADAM whose messenger RNA is detected in spermatogenic cells, placing it in the fertility-linked branch of the family alongside ADAM7, ADAM18 and ADAM29. Unlike the broadly acting sheddases, no physiological substrate has been assigned to ADAM20, and its biological function remains under investigation; its sequence retains features consistent with proteolytic capacity, although this has not been fully characterized. Expression profiling in the male gonad has made recombinant ADAM20 a reagent of interest for sperm biology, gamete interaction and reproductive toxicology research. Phylogenetically ADAM20 clusters with the reproductive ADAMs, and its expression pattern parallels that of ADAM21, reflecting a shared evolutionary origin within the family.
