ADAMTS9
ADAMTS9 is the largest and one of the most ancient members of the family, closest to the C. elegans protein GON-1, which controls gonadal invagination. In mammals the enzyme is secreted, cleaves hyalectan proteoglycans including versican and aggrecan, and participates in angiogenesis and extracellular-matrix organization. Complete Adamts9 deficiency is lethal during embryogenesis, reflecting essential roles in development, while human association studies have repeatedly linked the ADAMTS9 locus to type 2 diabetes risk and related metabolic traits. Recombinant ADAMTS9 is therefore a valuable reagent for both matrix biology and metabolic genetics.
