Integrin alpha X
Integrin alpha X (CD11c), encoded by ITGAX, is a beta-2 family alpha subunit expressed almost exclusively on myeloid cells including dendritic cells, macrophages and granulocytes. It assembles with beta-2 (CD18) into alpha X beta 2, historically called p150,95, and binds the complement fragment iC3b, fibrinogen and ICAM-1 to support phagocytosis, adhesion and chemotaxis. As the defining surface marker of conventional dendritic cells, CD11c is indispensable in immunology for identifying and isolating these antigen-presenting cells by flow cytometry or magnetic beads. Recombinant alpha X protein and anti-CD11c antibodies are core reagents for dendritic cell biology, vaccine research and studies of myeloid cell adhesion.
