MMP-25
MMP-25 (MT6-MMP, also called leukolysin) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase named for its prominent expression in leukocytes, most notably neutrophils, with additional presence in oral mucosal epithelium and head and neck squamous carcinomas. Like other MT-MMPs it activates pro-MMP-2 and localizes proteolysis to the cell surface, and reported substrates include gelatin and a variety of matrix components. In inflammation, the enzyme has been implicated in neutrophil functions and mucosal defense, while in oncology, overexpression in squamous cell carcinomas has positioned MMP-25 as a marker of aggressive epithelial malignancy. Its GPI anchor distinguishes it from transmembrane MT-MMPs and influences trafficking to lipid rafts.
