MMP-27
MMP-27 is among the least-characterized members of the matrix metalloproteinase family, originally recognized through sequence homology to stromelysin genes and conserved across vertebrate genomes. Its catalytic domain carries the defining zinc-binding motif, and the enzyme is secreted as a zymogen, but robust physiological substrates have not yet been assigned with confidence. Transcript analyses point to expression in leukocyte-rich tissues and in reproductive organs, and preliminary studies suggest possible participation in inflammatory settings rather than constitutive matrix turnover. Because its biological role remains unresolved, MMP-27 illustrates the portion of the matrixin family still awaiting functional annotation, and it is included in profiling studies of inflammatory and neoplastic tissue samples.
