Serpinb3a
Serpinb3a is the founding member of the mouse Serpinb3a-d subcluster within the expanded clade B serpin locus on chromosome 1, the mouse counterpart of the human SCCA/SERPINB3-B4 region. Like its paralogs, Serpinb3a encodes a signal peptide-free intracellular serpin expressed in squamous and barrier epithelia, where it is induced by injury, inflammation, and differentiating stimuli and is thought to restrain cysteine and serine proteases that would otherwise damage the epithelial barrier. Its transcript is a recognized marker of allergen-driven airway epithelial remodeling in mouse asthma models. Recombinant Serpinb3a enables gene-specific studies that distinguish it from the nearly identical Serpinb3b, c, and d paralogs.
