Serpinb3b
Serpinb3b is one of the four tandem mouse paralogs (Serpinb3a-d) that arose from duplication within the clade B serpin locus on chromosome 1, orthologous to the human SERPINB3/B4 SCCA region. It encodes an intracellular, non-secreted serpin expressed in skin, lung, and other barrier epithelia; expression is rapidly induced by mechanical injury, inflammatory cytokines, and helminth or allergen challenge, consistent with a protective brake on epithelial proteolysis during stress. Because paralog sequences are nearly identical, most phenotypes have been dissected using cluster-wide knockout mice rather than single-gene deletions. Recombinant Serpinb3b provides a defined protein for protease inhibition profiling and paralog-specific reagent development.
