Catechol violet is an iron ion chelating agent and colorimetric complexing reagent. Catechol violet can be used as a chromogenic, absorption spectroscopic, and spectrophotometric reagent for the determination of aluminum, forming a ternary complex with aluminum and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and quantifying the release of iron ions from nanocarriers by colorimetry. Catechol violet is a phenolic model aqueous pollutant and can be photocatalytically degraded under visible light by a molybdenum disulfide-bacterial cellulose nanocomposite with hydrogen peroxide.

Catechol violet (0.038% (w/v); 30 min) spectrophotometry can determine aluminum in fused silica glass rods, with absorbance values measured at pH 6.10 and 580 nm < 200-3100 μg/kg[2].
Catechol violet (200-300 μM; 180 min) is photocatalytically degraded by the BC/MoS2 nanocomposite membrane in aqueous solution containing H2O2 under visible light, with a degradation rate of 84.5% at 10 mM H2O2 and the highest activity at 100 mM H2O2[4].
