Complement C1q B-Chain (C1QB)
The B-chain of complement C1q, encoded by C1QB on chromosome 1 next to C1QA and C1QC, provides one of the three polypeptides that trimerize into the collagen-like stalks and globular heads of the classical-pathway recognition molecule. Within the head, the B-chain contributes surfaces required for binding immune complexes, apoptotic bodies and pattern molecules, and it is essential for C1q assembly and for activation of the C1r and C1s proteases. C1QB is transcribed chiefly in monocyte-macrophage and dendritic lineages. Inherited C1QB deficiency is strongly associated with systemic lupus erythematosus and glomerulonephritis. Recombinant C1q B-chain is used to dissect chain-specific assembly and ligand recognition.
