PI4KB

PI4KIIIβ is the Golgi-resident type III phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase, encoded by PI4KB. Recruited to the trans-Golgi network through interactions with small GTPases of the ARF family and with lipid effectors, it builds the PI4P gradient that drives budding of secretory vesicles and recruitment of adaptor and lipid-transfer proteins. PI4KIIIβ also sustains PI4P at the plasma membrane under certain stimuli and is a well-documented host dependency of enteroviruses, including poliovirus and rhinovirus, which redistribute the kinase to replication organelles, making it a target for broad-spectrum antiviral strategies. Unlike PI4KIIIα, PI4KIIIβ is highly sensitive to the inhibitor PIK93, a property widely used to dissect Golgi PI4P function.
