SSM-3 tetraTFA hydrate is a potent furin inhibitor with an EC50 of 54 nM. SSM-3 tetraTFA hydrate uses its positively charged guanidyl group to form strong electrostatic interactions with the negatively charged residues in the catalytic center of furin, thereby competitively occupying and blocking the active site. SSM-3 tetraTFA hydrate can be used in the research of anthrax and avian influenza.

Biological Activity
Description
In Vitro
SSM-3 (1-25 μM; 3 h) partially inhibits the processing of cell surface anthrax toxin protective antigen PA83 into PA63 in glioma U251 cell line[1].
SSM-3 (10-100 μM; 18-24 h) blocks the intracellular processing of pro-MT1-MMP to mature enzyme in the breast cancer MCF7 cell line expressing an MT1-MMP mutant (MCF-MT1-E240A-FLAG cells), and partially inhibits the intracellular processing and release of TGFβ1 in the fibrosarcoma HT1080 cell line[1].
SSM-3 potently inhibits purified human furin, with an EC50 of 54 nM[1].
SSM-3 (0.01-100 μM; 24 h) exhibits cytotoxicity against mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells at 100 μM[1].
