Thymol iodide is an iodine derivative of thymol, serving as a mild preservative and fungicide. Thymol iodide is commonly used as an iodine source in the intensive culture of rotifers. Thymol iodide effectively enables Brachionus "Cayman" rotifers to reach iodine levels similar to those of copepods, and maintains a high iodine content during storage. After 28 days of intrapleural injection of Thymol iodide, it does not enhance the efficacy of inducing pleurodesis in rabbits, nor does it improve the efficacy of talc slurry pleurodesis.

Description

Thymol iodide is an iodine derivative of thymol, serving as a mild preservative and fungicide. Thymol iodide is commonly used as an iodine source in the intensive culture of rotifers. Thymol iodide effectively enables Brachionus "Cayman" rotifers to reach iodine levels similar to those of copepods, and maintains a high iodine content during storage. After 28 days of intrapleural injection of Thymol iodide, it does not enhance the efficacy of inducing pleurodesis in rabbits, nor does it improve the efficacy of talc slurry pleurodesis[1][2].

In Vivo

Combined administration of thymol iodide (50 mg; intrapleural injection; single dose) with 200 mg/kg talc slurry does not enhance the efficacy of pleurodesis in rabbit experiments evaluated by pleural effusion volume, gross adhesion score or microscopic fibrosis score; only 30% of the tested rabbits achieve satisfactory pleurodesis efficacy on the 14th and 28th days post-administration[1].
Thymol iodide (0.3-25.2 g/kg feed; mixed with enrichment feed; 3 h enrichment) can efficiently enrich the iodine content of rotifers to a level comparable to that of copepods via an extremely low proportion of dietary replacement (accounting for 0.36-2.03% of the total diet), and maintains a stable iodine retention rate when stored at room temperature or low temperature for up to 18 h[2].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: New Zealand white (male)[1]
Dosage: 50 mg (as part of iodized talc slurry with 200 mg/kg talc)
Administration: intrapleural injection; single dose
Result: Recorded mean pleural fluid volume of 2.2 mL at 48 hours post-injection.
Reported mean gross pleurodesis adhesion score of 2.3 and mean microscopic pleural fibrosis score of 2.0 on day 28.
Found 30% of rabbits (3/10) had a good pleurodesis (score 3 or 4) on day 14 and 30% (3/10) on day 28.
Observed no significant differences in pleural fluid characteristics, gross adhesion scores, microscopic inflammation scores, or microscopic fibrosis scores compared to plain talc controls at any time point.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
