1. Membrane Transporter/Ion Channel Neuronal Signaling
  2. GABA Receptor
  3. Valerate sodium

Valerate sodium is the sodium salt of valeric acid, a short-chain fatty acid, and exhibits oral activity. Valerate sodium reduces binge ethanol intake and decreases blood ethanol concentration in mice, while also exerting anxiolytic effects. Valerate sodium increases GABA levels, regulates epigenetics and alters gut microbiome function. Valerate sodium can be used in research related to excessive alcohol consumption.

Description

Valerate sodium is the sodium salt of valeric acid, a short-chain fatty acid, and exhibits oral activity. Valerate sodium reduces binge ethanol intake and decreases blood ethanol concentration in mice, while also exerting anxiolytic effects. Valerate sodium increases GABA levels, regulates epigenetics and alters gut microbiome function. Valerate sodium can be used in research related to excessive alcohol consumption[1].

In Vivo

Sodium valerate (200 mM; p.o.; daily; 10 consecutive days) supplementation produces a 40% reduction in binge ethanol consumption and a 53% reduction in blood ethanol concentration in male C57BL/6J mice, alongside anxiolytic effects, increased GABA levels, epigenetic modulation, and altered gut microbiome function[1].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: C57BL/6J (male, 6-8 weeks old)[1]
Dosage: 200 mM
Administration: p.o.; daily; 10 consecutive days
Result: Reduced ethanol consumption by 40%.
Lowered blood ethanol concentration by 53%.
Increased percentage of time spent in the center of the open field and number of center entries, with no change in total distance traveled.
Elevated GABA levels in stool and amygdala.
Increased H4 histone acetylation in the amygdala.
Induced significant changes in amygdala gene expression, including upregulation of Kcna10, Pln, and Gpr56, and downregulation of Ptgs2, Mapks, and Gpr158; associated pathways included glutamate degradation, L-DOPA degradation, and anti-inflammatory effects.
Altered gut microbiome composition, with increased abundance of genera Ileibacterium and Dubosiella; reduced gut-brain module activity for GABA degradation and 7 other neuroactive compound pathways.
No significant effects on body weight, food intake, or fluid intake compared to controls.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
