5-Bromo-2-nitropyridine serves as a synthetic intermediate for pharmaceutical, pesticide and dye products, and also acts as an irritant. 5-Bromo-2-nitropyridine oxidizes hemoglobin to methemoglobin, causing cell and tissue damage as well as oxidative hemolysis.

5-Bromo-2-nitropyridine causes irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and is absorbed through human skin and respiratory tract. It induces methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure and delayed encephalopathy[1].
