Polycarbophil achieves bioadhesion through hydrogen bonding between carboxyl groups and mucosal surfaces, and prolongs compound retention time and regulates compound release through swelling properties. Polycarbophil relieves constipation and diarrhea.

Polycarbophil (0.5%-1.0% w/v; 25-120 min) increases the apparent permeability of Pipemidic acid (HY-B1210) by 2.3-4.3 times in isolated porcine urinary bladder wall, primarily due to enhanced urothelium permeability[2].
