Description

Conalbumin (Ovotransferrin) is an iron-binding protein present in egg white with antibacterial activity. Conalbumin can also be used to induce bronchial asthma. Conalbumin exhibits induced mRNA accumulation in chicken oviduct cells by estrogen and progesterone[1][2][3].

In Vitro

Conalbumin (0.2-100 nM; 0-6 h) can be induced in mRNA accumulation and protein synthesis in chicken oviduct explants by Estradiol (HY-B0141) and Progesterone (HY-N0437)[1].
Conalbumin (1.4-1.9 μM) chelates iron and exhibits varying degrees of growth inhibition in susceptible strains such as Micrococcus pyogenes var. albus cultured in PII/PI medium[2].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

In Vivo

Conalbumin (100-200 μg; i.p.) induces bronchial asthma in mice[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: CD1 mice (male, ~6 weeks old, 18-20 g, sensitized via intraperitoneal injections of conalbumin + alum, then intratracheally challenged with conalbumin)[3]
Dosage: 200 μg (sensitization); 100 μg (antigen challenge)
Administration: i.p. (alternating weeks, with 2 mg alum in 0.3 ml PBS); intratracheal (administered 7 days after last sensitization, repeated at 20 and 30 days after initial challenge, in 50 μl PBS)
Result: Induced typical pathological characteristics of allergic asthma in 6-week-old male CD1 mice, which is characterized by a significant increase in the percentages of peripheral blood eosinophils and basophils, a significant decrease in the percentage of monocytes, and severe peribronchial and perivascular inflammatory infiltration, epithelial edema and desquamation, as well as alveolar inflation, dilation and even emphysema in the lungs.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
