Dimethoxane is an antibacterial agent and an orally active oncogen. Dimethoxane exerts slow bactericidal action against various bacteria, rapid bacteriostatic action that halts bacterial growth, and does not induce bacterial lysis. Dimethoxane induces multiple tumor formation in rats. Dimethoxane functions as a low-toxicity preservative in cosmetic formulations and controls spoilage microorganisms in aqueous systems, emulsions, and suspensions.

Description

Dimethoxane is an antibacterial agent and an orally active oncogen. Dimethoxane exerts slow bactericidal action against various bacteria, rapid bacteriostatic action that halts bacterial growth, and does not induce bacterial lysis. Dimethoxane induces multiple tumor formation in rats. Dimethoxane functions as a low-toxicity preservative in cosmetic formulations and controls spoilage microorganisms in aqueous systems, emulsions, and suspensions[1][2].

In Vitro

Dimethoxane exhibits minimum inhibitory concentrations of 500 μg/cm3 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCTC 6750, 750 μg/cm3 against Escherichia coli 15TAU NCIB 10430, and 1000 μg/cm3 against Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 6571 in a broth serial dilution assay[1].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

In Vivo

Dimethoxane (1% solution in drinking water; p.o.; continuous; 613 days) induces a 56% tumor incidence (14 tumors in 25 rats) in male Wistar rats, including hepatomas, kidney carcinoma, skin and subcutaneous sarcomas/carcinomas, lymphosarcomas, and leukemia[2].

Animal Model: Wistar (young-adult male, 120-180 g)[2]
Dosage: 1% solution in drinking water; average total dose 237 g
Administration: oral; continuous; 613 days
Result: Detected 14 total tumors among 25 treated rats.
Induced 8 hepatomas, 1 papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney, 2 skin and subcutaneous tumors, 2 lymphosarcomas, and 1 myelogenous leukemia.
Caused death in 5 rats, 4 of which had tumors.
Observed hepatomas with numerous small foci, including one undifferentiated tumor over 3 cm in diameter; kidney tumor measuring 5.3 cm; skin epidermoid carcinoma measuring 2 cm; subcutaneous fibrosarcoma measuring 6 cm; mediastinal lymphosarcoma measuring 1.0 × 0.5 cm; and submandibular lymphosarcoma measuring 8 × 6 × 4 cm.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
