Norsanguinarine is a benzophenanthridine-type isoquinoline alkaloid and plant pathogenic Fungal spore germination inhibitor. Norsanguinarine is an intermediate in the biosynthetic process of sanguinarine-type alkaloids in poppy calli. Norsanguinarine is present in the whole plant of Eschscholtzia californica and calli of Papaver somniferum L. Norsanguinarine inhibits spore germination of Alternaria brassicicola and Curvularia maculans. Norsanguinarine can be used in studies related to plant pathogenic fungal infections.

In Vitro
Norsanguinarine (200-1000 ppm; 1 day) inhibits spore germination of multiple phytopathogenic fungi in vitro, with complete (100%) inhibition of Alternaria brassicicola and Curvularia maculans at 1000 ppm, and partial inhibition (29.2-44.0%) of the remaining tested fungi across 200, 500, and 1000 ppm concentrations[1].
