Angiotensinogen

Angiotensinogen (AGT, SERPINA8) is the substrate-forming member of the serpin superfamily: its N-terminal region is cleaved by the renal enzyme renin to release angiotensin I, the origin of the entire renin-angiotensin cascade that controls blood pressure, fluid balance, and vascular tone. Synthesized predominantly by hepatocytes and secreted in large amounts into plasma, angiotensinogen levels are upregulated by estrogens, glucocorticoids, and angiotensin II itself, and AGT gene variants are associated with hypertension and preeclampsia. Local production also occurs in kidney, heart, brain, and adipose tissue. Recombinant angiotensinogen is a key reagent for renin activity assays and cardiovascular drug development targeting the RAAS axis.
