Indole-3-pyruvic acid is an orally active ketone analog of tryptophan, and is an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) agonist. Indole-3-pyruvic acid inhibits p38/MAPK phosphorylation, regulates the tryptophan metabolic pathway, and also possesses protective activities against skin photodamage, as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety bioactivities in the gut. Indole-3-pyruvic acid can downregulate the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, Cox-2, and Bax to alleviate UVB-induced keratinocyte toxicity. Indole-3-pyruvic acid can activate AHR to promote Tr1 cell differentiation, increase IL-10, and inhibit Th1 cytokine production. Indole-3-pyruvic acid can alter the levels of kynurenine metabolites in the brain, mediating central nervous system-related effects. Indole-3-pyruvic acid can be used in research on skin lesions, colitis, and anxiety .

3-Indoleacetic acid, suitable for plant cell culture (IAA), is a naturally occurring plant growth hormone that is widely present in plants, bacteria, and fungi. 3-Indoleacetic acid, suitable for plant cell culture, is a plant growth-promoting hormone that not only promotes plant growth but also protects bacteria from the toxic damage to cell membrane potential caused by other indole intermediate products (such as I3P) produced during their own metabolic processes. 3-Indoleacetic acid, suitable for plant cell culture, can be used in plant cell culture .

L-Indole-3-lactic acid is an L (-)-tryptophan metabolite found in strains of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus paraplantarum, and also an indole-based antioxidant. L-Indole-3-lactic acid is produced via the pathway that converts tryptophan into indole-3-pyruvic acid. L-Indole-3-lactic acid acts as a free radical scavenger to eliminate DPPH free radicals. L-Indole-3-lactic acid can be used in antioxidant and metabolism-related research .
