Isomaltotetraose is an orally active branched isomaltooligosaccharide with α-(1,6) glycosidic linkages. Isomaltotetraose is a prebiotic oligosaccharide present in honey and also a component of isomaltooligosaccharide mixtures. Isomaltotetraose maintains the growth of Prevotella or sustains the *Prevotella* enterotype in both in vitro systems and mouse models.

Isomaltotetraose can be produced in an IMO mixture with 25.0% isomaltotetraose within 20 h of synchronous incubation through the synergistic action of Bacillus stearothermophilus
Maltogenic amylase (HY-E70325) (BSMA) and α-GTase on liquefied corn starch; in contrast, sequential addition of α-GTase without inactivating BSMA reduces the isomaltotetraose content, thus favoring the production of longer-chain IMO[1].
The Prevotella enterotype is one of the three major structural types of the human gut microbiota, characterized by the dominance of Prevotella bacteria in the gut. This type of microbiota is highly adept at degrading plant-derived complex polysaccharides and contributes to weight management and metabolic health[2].
