L-Lactaldehyde
L-Lactaldehyde ((2S)-Hydroxypropanal) is a chiral aldehyde, metabolic intermediate, and enzyme substrate. L-Lactaldehyde is oxidized to L-lactate by NAD-dependent lactaldehyde dehydrogenase. L-Lactaldehyde is reduced to L-1,2-propanediol by NADH/NADPH-dependent oxidoreductases. L-Lactaldehyde is used in studies of microbial sugar metabolism and carbonyl metabolism.

Purified dog liver dimeric dihydrodiol dehydrogenase reduces L-Lactaldehyde ((2S)-Hydroxypropanal), with a Km value of 0.67 mM, a Vmax value of 1.15 units/mg, and a Vmax/Km ratio of 1.7 units/mg/mM[1].
L-Lactaldehyde is an NADH-dependent substrate of Escherichia coli propanediol oxidoreductase, which can be reduced to L-1,2-propanediol. Its Km is 0.035 mM, Vmax is 20 μmol/min/mg, and the optimal pH for the reaction is 6.5[2].
L-Lactaldehyde acts as a stereoselective substrate for Saccharomyces cerevisiae NAD-dependent lactaldehyde dehydrogenase, which oxidizes it to L-lactate with a Km of 10 mM, whereas the activity of D-lactaldehyde is only 0.2% that of L-Lactaldehyde[3].
