Menaquinone 9 is a naphthoquinone-type vitamin K and electron transport component produced by bacteria. Menaquinone 9 is an orally active analog of Vitamin K2 (HY-109569). Menaquinone 9 acts as an ultraviolet-sensitive, photooxidizable substrate that generates more polar photodegradation products under oxygen and ultraviolet irradiation. Menaquinone 9 binds to the αβ dimer of Escherichia coli nitrate reductase, supporting electron transport within the αβ subunit structure of the enzyme. Menaquinone 9 serves as a precursor for bone Menaquinone-4 (HY-B2156). Menaquinone 9 can be used in studies related to metabolic diseases.

Biological Activity
Menaquinone 9 (in the form of oxidized derivatives) binds specifically to the ab dimer of heat-released *E. coli* PK27 nitrate reductase; and undergoes photooxidation in the presence of air to produce more polar degradation products[1].
Menaquinone 9 (in anaerobic form) specifically binds to the heat-transformed nitrate reductase ab dimer of *Escherichia coli* PK27[1].

Result:Increased liver MK4 and MK9 concentrations significantly in mice fed 2.1 mg MK9/kg diet compared to those fed 0.06 mg MK9/kg diet.
Detected MK4 as the only vitamin K form in bone; increased bone MK4 concentrations significantly in mice fed 2.1 mg MK9/kg diet compared to those fed 0.06 mg MK9/kg diet.
Demonstrated 63%-67% of skeletal MK4 was derived from labeled MK9 in mice fed 2.1 mg/kg deuterium-labeled MK9; reached labeled MK4 concentrations of 22 pmol/g in males and 37 pmol/g in females.
Showed no significant differences in femoral tissue strength, maximum bending moment, section modulus, femur length, and total body BMD between diet groups in either sex.
Decreased femoral cross-sectional area and moment of inertia significantly in female mice fed 2.1 mg MK9/kg diet compared to those fed 0.06 mg MK9/kg diet; observed no such differences in male mice.
