CD83

CD83 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily that serves as the classic marker of dendritic cell maturation. Its expression is low on immature precursors and rises sharply upon activation, and the protein also reaches the surface of activated B cells and subsets of T cells. The extracellular IgV-like domain can be shed as a soluble CD83 form that exerts immunosuppressive effects, whereas membrane CD83 supports antigen presentation and is required for efficient CD4+ T cell priming. Because of its specificity for mature professional antigen-presenting cells, CD83 is widely used to monitor dendritic cell vaccines and activation status in immune monitoring assays.
