CD147

CD147, also known as basigin or EMMPRIN, is a broadly expressed single-pass glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It first drew attention as the tumor-derived factor that stimulates fibroblasts to secrete matrix metalloproteinases, paving invasion routes in carcinomas and rheumatoid pannus. CD147 further serves as the obligatory chaperone escorting the monocarboxylate transporters MCT1 and MCT4 to the plasma membrane, a function central to the lactate metabolism of hypoxic tumors. Additional interactions include cyclophilin A binding, a proposed role in SARS-CoV-2 host entry, and key functions in germ cell and retinal development, where basigin deficiency causes retinal degeneration phenotypes in mice. Recombinant CD147 is a standard reagent in MMP regulation and metabolic studies.
