Solanidine is an orally active cholestane alkaloid. Solanidine can be isolated from potato. Solanidine decreases RAD51 and increases γH2AX and p53. Solanidine has anti-tumor effects on LLC tumors and lung cancer. Solanidine promotes breast cancer cell proliferation. Solanidine reduces neovascularization. Solanidine causes abortion in some pregnant mice.

In Vitro

Solanidine (10 μM) increases the proliferation of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in the estrogen-depleted condition^[1].
Solanidine (4-8 μM; 48 h) induces DNA damage in A549 cells and reduces the migration and invasion of A549 cells under hypoxic conditions^[2].

In Vivo

Solanidine (2.4 mmol/kg; p.o., dietary administration; 14 days) causes hepatomegaly in non-pregnant and pregnant mice, reduces body weight gains, litter weights, and average fetus weights in pregnant mice, and leads to abortions in some pregnant mice^[1].
Solanidine (4-8 μM; topical application; 7 days) reduces neovascularization in the alkali burn corneal model of rats^[2].
Solanidine (10-20 mg/kg; i.p.; every other day; 6 doses) regresses LLC tumor in Balb/C female mice, reduces the number of tumor nodules, and extends the survival of animals^[2].
