DNA alkylating agents are a class of electrophilic chemical substances capable of covalently transferring alkyl groups (such as methyl or chloroethyl) to DNA bases; they permanently modify DNA structure, block replication and transcription, and ultimately induce apoptosis. While primarily used in cancer chemotherapy, they also possess mutagenic and carcinogenic toxicity.
