Gallamine Triethiodide is a blood-brain barrier-permeable skeletal muscle relaxant. Gallamine Triethiodide induces skeletal muscle paralysis by blocking acetylcholine. Gallamine Triethiodide directly stimulates intracardiac β receptors. Gallamine Triethiodide prolongs the duration of afterdischarge in the cat cerebral cortex. Gallamine Triethiodide can be used in studies related to convulsive disorders.

Animal Model:Domestic cats (2.5 to 5 kg, both sexes, with permanently implanted platinum electrodes over the pial surface of the suprasylvian gyrus)[2]

Dosage:6.25 mg/kg (single dose); 12.5 mg/kg (repeated heavy doses in a separate animal)

Administration:i.v.; single dose; repeated heavy doses (separate animal)

Result:Increased cortical afterdischarge duration to a statistically significant level (0.1% level, Mann-Whitney U test) at 10 to 20 minutes post-administration, peaked within 0.5 to 1 hour, and outlasted recovery from paralysis by up to 1 hour.
Increased average cortical afterdischarge duration from 4 seconds to 180 seconds in immobilized cats.
Induced a similar increase in afterdischarge duration with a second 6.25 mg/kg i.v. dose in one animal.
Induced a generalized electrographic seizure lasting 6 minutes with repeated 12.5 mg/kg i.v. doses.
Showed no consistent changes in expiratory carbon dioxide, blood pressure, body temperature, blood glucose, or direct cortical response to brief single stimuli correlated with increased afterdischarge duration.
