Antimycin A2 is a selective inhibitor of the cytochrome b-c1 complex in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Antimycin A2 disrupts mitochondrial membrane potential and produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inhibiting electron transfer between cytochrome b and c. Antimycin A2 has bactericidal and piscicidal activity, as well as tumor cell growth inhibitory effects, and can induce S-phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HeLa cells. Antimycin A2 is suitable for research of cervical cancer and fisheries management. Antimycin A2 can be naturally isolated from the fermentation products of Streptomyces sp. strains.

Biological Activity
Antimycin A2 (0.1-1.0 μg/mL; overnight incubation at 30°C) inhibits the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y-30, exhibiting the same fungicidal activity as the Antimycin A complex and its other major components (A1, A3, A4). The activity, corresponding to the diameter of the inhibition zone, of 82% (relative to the complex at 100%), and the actual minimum inhibitory concentration (m1) was 0.048-0.051 μg/mL[1].

The apparent difference in inhibition zone sizes was caused by its diffusion coefficient in agar rather than inherent biological activity.

No significant differences in the mean death time of goldfish were detected among Antimycin A2, the complex, and other fractions at the tested concentrations, confirming that its fish-toxic potential was consistent with other components of the Antimycin A complex.
