Coccidia

Coccidia comprise protozoan parasites including Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Eimeria spp., and Cystoisospora spp., and their life cycle switches between asexual and sexual stages[1]. Mechanistically, Eimeria invasion depends on coccidian organelles and host-cell interaction during intestinal infection[2][3]. In poultry models, Eimeria invades the intestinal tract and causes coccidiosis, with disease severity and lesions varying by parasite species[4][3]. Compared with T. gondii, which infects warm-blooded animals asexually but restricts sexual development to felines, Eimeria usually completes its whole life cycle in one host species[5]. For experimental applications, monolayer cultures, organoids, axenic systems, and host cell-free Cystoisospora suis models support research on parasite development, invasion, host-parasite interaction, and anticoccidial drug targets[1][6].
