Eucomic acid

Eucomic acid is a derivative of Malic acid (HY-Y1311). Eucomic acid also acts as an anti-plasmodial inhibitor, pigment inducer and antioxidant. Eucomic acid inhibits the growth of Plasmodium falciparum. Eucomic acid promotes the production of black pigments in mature soybean pods and seed coats through oxidation or polymerization, while exerting antioxidant effects. Eucomic acid can be isolated from the roots of Eriosema montanum and the bulbs of Eucomis punctata. Eucomic acid can be used in research on malaria, antioxidation, etc.

In Vitro

Eucomic acid (structure 1) potently inhibits the growth of Plasmodium falciparum strain 3D7 in vitro after 48 h, with an IC₅₀ value of 0.057 µg/mL^[1].
Eucomic acid (3 days) exhibits extremely low cytotoxicity against the human acute leukemia cell line THP-1 in vitro, with a CC₅₀ value of 374.9 µg/mL^[1].
Eucomic acid (4.1 μg/g FW; 3 days) is abundant in the black pods of soybean lines expressing functional L1 (R171-BLk, L1-OE1), and together with Piscidic acid (HY-N11707), it promotes the formation of black pigments in mature soybean pods^[2].
