Nonoxynol-9 (0.0625-0.5 mg/mL) potently reduces viability of human sperm in a concentration-dependent manner[1].
Nonoxynol-9 disrupts membrane integrity, damages organelles (including mitochondria and nuclei), induces intracellular acidification, alters redox balance, inhibits capacitation-related signaling, and reduces zona pellucida binding of human sperm[1].
Nonoxynol-9 (1-100 μg/mL; 1 min) induces a dose-dependent reduction in washed boar sperm motility[2].
Nonoxynol-9 (0.05%; 30 s) directly inactivates HIV virions, and blocks infection of HIV-pulsed cells[3].
Nonoxynol-9 exhibits in vitro activity against a range of sexually transmitted infection pathogens including HSV, cytomegalovirus, and multiple bacterial and protozoal species[3].
Nonoxynol-9 (0.00025%; 24-48 h; or 2 h daily for 3 days) causes cumulative cytotoxicity in primary vaginal epithelial cells, and repeat 2-hour daily exposures over 3 days increasing cytotoxicity[3].
Nonoxynol-9 (6-24 h) induces proinflammatory cytokine release (IL-1a, IL-1b, IL-8) in primary vaginal epithelial cells[3].
