Pivalic acid (Trimethylmethanecarboxylic acid; Versatic 5 acid; tert-Pentanoic acid) is a short-chain branched fatty acid containing a tert-butyl quaternary carbon structure. Pivalic acid is released from the hydrolysis of Pivaloyloxymethyl ester prodrugs and can then combine with L-carnitine (HY-B0399) to form Pivaloylcarnitine, which is excreted in urine, leading to dose- and time-dependent secondary L-carnitine depletion. Pivalic acid (HY-Y1150) is the starting unit for the biosynthesis of tert-butyl fatty acids and antibiotics (Antibiotic) in Alicyclobacillus, Rhodococcus, and Streptomyces.
