Phenylpropanoids

Arctiin is an orally active inhibitor of NF-κB. Arctiin suppresses cyclin D1 protein expression in human tumor cells. Arctiin also reduces malondialdehyde and pro-in ammatory cytokines levels. Arctiin can used in study glomerulonephritis.

Bergaptol is an inhibitor of debenzylation of the CYP3A4 enzyme with an IC₅₀ of 24.92 μM. Recent studies have shown that it has anti-proliferative and anti-cancer properties.

Isoforsythiaside is an antioxidant and antibacterial phenylethanoid glycoside with MICs of 40.83, 40.83, and 81.66 μg/mL for Escherichia coli(E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PAO), and Staphylococcus aureus (SA), respectively.

Schisandrin (Schizandrin), a dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan, is isolated from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis Baill. Schisandrin exhibits antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Schisandrin also can reverses memory impairment in rats.

Schisandrol B (Gomisin-A) is a major active constituent of Schisandra chinensis with hepato-protective effects. Schisandrol B inhibits reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Schisandrol B inhibits the activity of P-glycoprotein and CYP3A and also has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and antioxidant activities.

Cimifugin (Cimitin) is a bioactive component of Cimicifuga racemosa, a Chinese herb. Cimifugin suppresses allergic inflammation by reducing epithelial derived initiative key factors via regulating tight junctions. Cimifugin reduces the migration and chemotaxis of RAW264.7 cells and inhibits the release of inflammatory factors and activation of MAPKs and NF-κB signaling pathways induced by LPS.

Syringin (Eleutheroside B) is an active natural phenolic glycoside possessing various pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-irradiation, anti-osteoporosis and anticancer activities. Syringin also can be used to enhance memory, relieve fatigue, improve human cognition and protect ischemia heart against cerebrovascular damage, etc.

Beta-asarone is an orally active and BBB-penetrable anti-inflammatory agent and neuroprotective agent, which is the major ingredient of Acorus tatarinowii Schott. Beta-asarone can protect nerve cells from apoptosis and autophagy, inhibit expression of α-synuclein, as well as myocardial protection. Beta-asarone can be used in the study of neurological and cardiovascular diseases.

(E)-Ferulic acid is an isomer of ferulic acid, an aromatic compound abundant in plant cell walls. (E)-Ferulic acid causes phosphorylation of β-catenin (β-catenin), leading to proteasome degradation, increasing the expression of pro-apoptotic factor Bax and reducing pro-apoptotic factor Expression of the survival factor survivin. (E)-Ferulic acid can effectively remove reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibit lipid peroxidation. (E)-Ferulic acid exerts antiproliferative and antimigratory effects in the human lung cancer cell line H1299.

Nodakenin is a major coumarin glucoside in the root of Angelica decusiva. Nodakenin inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity with an IC₅₀ of 84.7 μM.

Isofraxidin, a coumarin component from Acanthopanax senticosus, inhibits MMP-7 expression and cell invasion of human hepatoma cells. Isofraxidin inhibits the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 in hepatoma cells. Isofraxidin attenuates the expression of iNOS and COX-2, Isofraxidinalso inhibits TLR4/myeloid differentiation protein-2 (MD-2) complex formation.

Notopterol is a coumarin extracted from N. incisum. Notopterol induces apoptosis and has antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Notopterol is used for acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

S-(+)-Marmesin is a natural coumarin, exhibiting COX-2/5-LOX dual inhibitory activity.

Eleutheroside E is an important component of ginseng that can be taken orally. Eleutheroside E has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and it helps reduce apoptosis in heart cells caused by hypoxia-reoxygenation (H/R) damage.
