Atherosperminine (Atherospermine) is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Atherosperminine inhibits growth of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. Atherosperminine scavenges DPPH free radicals, exhibits ferric reducing power, and chelates metal ions. Atherosperminine can be used for the research of malaria.

In Vitro

Atherosperminine (25-100 μM; 15 min) exerts concentration-dependent, non-specific inhibition of contractions induced by multiple agonists in isolated guinea-pig trachealis[1].
Atherosperminine (25-500 μM) induces concentration-dependent relaxation of carbachol-precontracted isolated guinea-pig trachealis with an EC50 of 117.8 μM, an effect independent of β-adrenoceptors, ATP-sensitive K+ channels, and tracheal epithelium[1].
Atherosperminine (25-50 μM; 15 min) potentiates forskolin-induced relaxation of carbachol-precontracted isolated guinea-pig trachealis by 2.4-fold and 5.0-fold, respectively[1].
Atherosperminine (50-250 μM; 5 min) concentration-dependently increases cAMP content in isolated guinea-pig trachealis without altering cGMP content[1].
Atherosperminine (25-2500 μM; 30 min) potently inhibits cAMP phosphodiesterase (IC50 = 56.8 μM) and weakly inhibits cGMP phosphodiesterase (IC50 = 693.3 μM) in guinea-pig trachealis homogenate[1].
Atherosperminine exhibits antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 54.53 μg/mL for DPPH radical scavenging, and demonstrates metal chelating activity with an IC50 of 42.87 μg/mL[2].
Atherosperminine exhibits antiplasmodial activity, with an IC50 value of 5.80 μM[2].

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
